Summer Solstice Swim

Summer Solstice Swim 2025

We’re celebrating the longest day of the year (the summer solstice) on Sunday 21st December 2025.

Yes, we know the solstice is technically the 22nd, but swimming on a Sunday means more people can join in.

There are two options:

Cruisy swimmers and dippers: Queenstown Bay dip

  • Meet at 8am at Queenstown Bay (in front of the Bathhouse cafe).
  • Swim or dip – you choose on the day (swimmers please bring your tow floats).
  • Afterwards, we’ll seek out hot coffee in a cafe!

Advanced swimmers: Swim to sunrise

  • Start swimming at 4am at the Frankton Swim Lane.
  • If needed, car swaps and support will be organised. Let us know by email if you’re coming so you know where and when you’ll need to meet the other swimmers.
  • Don’t forget your tow float and a light (e.g. a glow stick inside your tow float) – it will be dark.
  • Swim 6km to Queenstown Bay.

Please only join this swim if you are confident you can complete this distance in Lake Whakatipu (expected temperature will be 14 degrees Celsius).
